Exploring Science: Magic of Light and Sound

Is the light really white? How does sound travel?

These questions and many more can be answered by the Girl Scouts of Michigan Pine and Dunes Council's presentation of "The 'Magic' of Light and Sound" exploration outreach! We'll demonstrate the properties and uses of light and sound using the magic of science. Your class can take part in various experiments and demonstrations, including:

Activities include:

  • Refracting light to 'bend' objects
  • Separating the colors out of white light
  • Creating musical instruments
  • Discovering and seeing 'invisible' vibrations
  • Exploring the sound absorption of objects

This program meets the following benchmarks:

SCI.I.4.E.1: Describe sound in terms of their properties.

SCI.V.4.E.2: Explain how sounds are made.

SCI.V.4.E.3: Use prisms and filters with light sources to produce various colors of light.

SCI.V.4.E.4: Explain how shadows are made.

WHO? "The 'Magic' of Light and Suond" is suitable for grades 3-5, with a maximum of 30 students.

WHERE? A representative from our Environmental Science Center will come into your classroom for a two-hour program.

COST? $2.00 per student
